Shidler College of Business BusAd G-102
Topic: "Why Chinese are Investing Overseas and What Can Hawaii Offer?"
Speaker: Ms. Betty Brow
Executive Vice President, Bank of Hawaii, International Banking Division
This lecture discusses the issues of China growing in wealth and power and underlining the fact that the Chinese government is actively encouraging both state-owned and privately-owned enterprises and individuals to seek overseas investments. The United States is increasingly a destination for Chinese investments but Hawaii is not even a blip on the Chinese investors’ radar screen. The key to attract direct investments from China is to understand why they are investing overseas and how Hawaii could position itself to attract a portion of these investments.
About the Speaker:
Ms. Betty Brow is the Executive Vice President and Manager of International Banking Division at the Bank of Hawaii. International Banking is responsible for business with foreign clients of the Bank, both commercial and individual, with a focus on the major Asian markets, including China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Philippines and South East Asia. The Division serves its clients in 9 different languages.
Ms. Brow started her career working for the US Postal Service in New Jersey and Washington DC. She later spent four years as a diplomat with the US State Department, with assignments at US embassies in Moscow and Beijing. Betty then spent 20 years in Hongkong working for Chemical Bank (JP Morgan), Banker’s Trust (Deutsche Bank), and International Bank of Asia (Fubon Bank), in commercial, investment, and retail banking. After her return to the US, she worked for the American Savings Bank before joining Bank of Hawaii. Betty was born in Vietnam and has lived in India, France, Russia, China, and Hongkong. She currently serves on the board of a number of Hawaii non-profit organizations, including the Chinese Chamber of Commerce (current President), Vietnamese-American Chamber of Commerce (current President), Honolulu Japan Chamber of Commerce, Japan-America Society, the YWCA of Oahu, the Girl Scouts of Hawaii, the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council, Honolulu Festival Foundation, Filipino Community Center Board of Governors, and the Advisory Board of the African-American Diversity Cultural Center (current Chairman).
