Reflecting Together on the Image of the Child in The Wonder of Learning Exhibit

August 24, 9:00am - 3:00pm
West Oʻahu Campus, UH West O'ahu Library

Lella Gandini will be featured in a two-day discussion to learn more deeply about the richness of the Reggio Emilia experience in the context of The Wonder of Learning, a traveling exhibition, which has been telling the story of the Reggio Emilia infant-toddler and preschool educational experience worldwide for over 30 years.

Lella, who worked directly with founder Loris Malaguzzi, knows first-hand the principles underlying the Reggio approach and the critical importance of how we view children, how we develop our relationships with them, how we create the learning environments respectful of children, and how we construct learning with them. Lella will support our learning as we enter and re-enter the Wonder of Learning exhibit, reflecting on the experience of the exhibit in our own contexts.

Presented as a narrative, The Wonder of Learning gives visibility to processes and life situations that cannot be linked to standard pedagogical models. The exhibit is based on research – the center of which is the image of a child who is competent in building knowledge and is a constant seeker of meanings. The Wonder of Learning exhibit is on display in the UH West O'ahu Library now through December 7.

Lella Gandini, Ed.D., is Adjunct Professor of Education at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Visiting Scholar (2007–2009) at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She received her master’s degree in child study from Smith College, her doctoral degree in education from the University of Massachusetts, and, in 2004, an honorary doctorate in humane letters from the Erikson Institute.
