EALL Talk Series 2 - Prof. Chikako Tsuruta

February 21, 3:00pm - 4:00pm
Mānoa Campus, Moore 258

Interpreters have gotten a lot of attention lately. There is the hiring of the fake sign language interpreter at Mandella's memorial, and last month, Japan's Foreign Ministry reprimanded the simultaneous interpreter for embellishing Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s World War I remarks at the World Economic Forum. What does it take to become a good interpreter and can those things be taught? Professor Tsuruta's approach to this question will include the results of a survey done by AIIC, a top interpreters' association, her experience as a teacher at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, and her own experience interpreting at events such as Obama's State of the Union address broadcast on TV across Japan.
