A Workshop on Local Ecological Knowledge
February 28, 2:30pm - 5:30pmMānoa Campus, Moore Hall, Room 575
The bodies of knowledge, skills, practices, and beliefs that communities around the world develop in connection to their local environments---collectively known as "local ecological knowledge" (LEK)---are often the object of study of physical sciences like botany and zoology, but they do not usually enter into the discourses of fields such as the social sciences, the arts (visual, performing, and literary), the humanities, and education, among others. This interdisciplinary workshop will allow participants not only to engage in discussions about LEK, but also to collaborate in hands-on, data-oriented, and solutions-based activities.
The workshop will take place on February 28 and March 1, 2014 at the University of Hawai‘i at MÄnoa. Featured guest presenters from Aotearoa (New Zealand) and the Mortlock Islands in Chuuk State will discuss topics such as the emergence of LEK in performance and the experiential learning of LEK by children. The workshop is free, but seats are limited due to seating restrictions of the venue. Please contact Emerson Odango (emerson.odango@gmail.com) before registration closes on January 31, 2014 for RSVPs.
