Kwan Tze-Wan -"Multi-function Chinese Character Database"
March 5, 2:30pm - 4:30pmMānoa Campus, Sakamaki Hall C-308
Through the support of the Quality Education Fund of the Hong Kong government, the "Multifunction Chinese Character Database" is now being implemented by the Research Center for Humanities Computing at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The database makes full use of the archaic script resources in its attempt to provide etymological accounts for some 2,300 head characters. The database team advocates the importance of script "components" as a supplement, if not replacement, for the traditionally used "radicals". Among various new features implemented, the use of semantic trees and semantic formulas as demonstrative devices for meaning constitution of Chinese characters will be highlighted.
