Presented by UHM Professor Tamara Albertini - When Hermeneutics Becomes Hermeneuthics: al-Ghazzali's Subject-Centered Tariqa (Path) and his Philosophy of Language

This talk revisits materials discussed in a pre-existing paper in which show that Ibn Hazm's and al-Ghazzali's divergent interpretations of Christianity are rooted in different epistemologies. While Ibn Hazm is "authority-centered" and assumes that (scriptural) words carry but one meaning, al-Ghazzali operates with a "subject-centered" methodology in which an author's psychological intention determines the meanings of words. I propose a re-reading of their respective positions by focusing on the word-meaning (lafda-ma'na) relationship specific to Arabic language.
