The cost of textbooks and instructional materials represents a significant financial burden to students. Academic success may also be impacted as students forgo buying textbooks or do not take classes because of the expense.

The Open Educational Resource movement aims to produce open textbooks and other instructional materials, making them available to students free of charge.
