15th Annual Advanced Human Rights Summer Seminar

The 15th annual summer seminar focus is Human Rights of Indigenous Peoples: From the Sustainable Development Goals to a Binding Treaty on Business & Human Rights and the Universal Periodic Review & Hawai'i. The talks will trace the historical developments of human rights of indigenous peoples in international law and the accompanying important institutions and instruments measuring implementation. There will also be discussion about the Universal Periodic Review and how Hawai'i can participate in creating culture of human rights in our islands and influence the global process. Â
The summer seminar will take place from 20 - 25 July 2012. The conference will take place at the University of Hawaii at Manoa Queen Lili'uokalani Center for Student Services Room 412 daily from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.  There will be a film festival featuring documentary movies throughout the week.  On Wednesday, there will be a community forum and short film festival at Capital One 360 Red Room at 5:00 p.m. . On Friday, at 12:30 p.m. there will be a Human Rights Campus Community Dialogue via Hawaii Interactive Television System connecting all of the islands. There will also be a community forum at Capital One 360 Red Room at 5:00 p.m. with the theme, The Universal Periodic Review and You: Overview, Objective & Opportunities. The philosophy of the training program is dedication to the promotion of human rights principles and a culture of peace through education and personal empowerment. The course advocates the use of public law instruments in implementing civil, political, economic, social, cultural, collective and solidarity rights. The week long seminar strives for social justice in the development of a sustainable society in Hawaii.Â
