ROOT Analysis Framework Introduction
September 11, 3:00pm - 5:00pmMānoa Campus, Watanabe Hall, 112
Department of Physics and Astronomy Colloquium: Prof. Philip von Doetinchem, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Hawaii, Manoa to speak on “ROOT Analysis Framework Introduction.â€
Abstract:
ROOT (http://root.cern.ch) is an analysis and plotting framework written in C++ that is widely used in particle physics. Although it is developed at CERN and contains some functionalities tailored to the analysis of particle physics experiments, it provides many powerful tools for a wide range of purposes. I will give an introduction to ROOT and cover important features from simple plotting routines over the ROOT file format to usage in QT standalone GUIs. This introduction consists of two lectures and has by no means the intention to be complete, but to provide the necessary tools to further explore the vast amount of ROOT options.
This will be a hands-on introduction. Participants should come with pre-installed ROOT and be prepared to do some work. We will work with ROOT 5.34, which can be downloaded for free at: http://root.cern.ch/drupal/content/production-version-534. Unless you are running one of the listed file systems, I recommend downloading the source and compiling it on your machine (http://root.cern.ch/drupal/content/installing-root-source). Building ROOT requires to have a number of packages to be installed. Please check: http://root.cern.ch/drupal/content/build-prerequisites. It will be most convenient to use ROOT with Linux or OSX. Although ROOT usage of Windows is possible, including ROOT in standalone C++ programs will get difficult. I will give a very quick C++ introduction at the beginning, but do not go into details.
