"MODIFIED," an exhibition of work by students in ART 466
November 16, 2014 - November 26, 2014Mānoa Campus, Art Buidlling, Commons Gallery
"MODIFIED," an exhibition at the Commons Gallery, features the work of ten BFA students in ART 466 Typography III, a course taught by Professor Chae Ho Lee at the Department of Art and Art History, University of Hawai‘i at MÄnoa.
The students created unique alphabets inspired by astronomical phenomena, Japanese woodblock printing (ukiyo-e), Jewish/German Blackletter, Hispanic textiles, low poly graphics, Maori Kowhaiwhai patterns and origami folds. Non-Latin alphabets were also created and inspired by Japanese handwritten menus, 17th century Russian scripts and combining an Armenian alphabet with Hawaiian petroglyphs. The exhibition includes a series of large format color posters displaying each alphabet as well as a specimen of the alphabet’s letterforms in use. Each student also presented their alphabets lasercut into vibrant acrylics and exotic woods, printed onto fabric, folded into paper or carefully woven with thread into a typographic sculpture.
