Lecture: Indian Dance Forms and Films with Dr. Angana Jhaveri

This presentation is an introduction to some of the best known Indian Classical Dance forms through films made in India and includes a comparison of dance documentaries on Bharata Natyam made by established film makers. Excerpts of some of Jhaveri’s films on Indian Heritage will be screened.

Angana Jhaveri feels extremely fortunate to have been born to a classical dancer in India the land of timeless traditions and spiritual masters. She trained early with her mother, her sisters and their guru from Manipur and performed with the Jhaveri Sisters Dance Company all over India and abroad. To compliment her interest in classical dance she received a Masters in Ancient Indian Culture and then a PhD on the Raslila Dance Theater of Manipur from Michigan State University, funded by the then JDR 3rd Fund (Asian Cultural Council).

Currently, under the banner of Illumine Films, Angana produces and directs documentaries that share her understanding and experience of the rich Indian and Asian heritage as well as films that introduce individuals and institutions doing extraordinary not for profit work for social good. Her films have been funded by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian Government’s Department of Culture and Education and she has done three films of the CSMVS Museum in Bombay (The Prince of Wales Museum).
