Abstract:

Professor Nugent and Businger will lead an informal discussion about the recent Atlantic Hurricane season, namely Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. The following topics will be discussed: 1) An account of the human impacts from Hurricane Irma on St. Maarten as well as Florida, 2) Hurricane Maria impacts on Dominica, and Puerto Rico, and 3) attribution of extreme events to climate change by the media, and 4) forecast accuracy from US models and the European model (ECMWF).
