The four-day institute brings together research and techniques drawn from neuroscience, psychiatry, sociology, special education, early care and education, child development and cross-cultural research to an in-depth understanding of how to support children and families. When we are better prepared, difficult behavior is less severe, less frequent, and less contagious and all children and families feel safe.
This summer’s institute will enable participants to:
- Deepen understanding of the role of culture in the lives of children and families and the potential for cultural discontinuity between programs and the families and children they serve.
- Define challenging behavior and explain theories of aggression.
- Explain the impact of biological and environmental risk factors on brain development and children’s behavior.
- Explain how attachment influences behavior.
- Improve ability to prevent challenging behavior and use strategies that effectively respond to challenging behavior.
Barbara Kaiser, MA is the co-author of Challenging Behavior in Young Children: Understanding, Preventing and Responding Effectively (4th edition) and a frequent presenter at national and international conferences.
