The three key elements of a successful outcome involved: 1. Leadership delivering clear messaging 2. A continuous learning process 3. Technological innovation The largely successful response of the military in the Pacific to the coronavirus pandemic threat contrasts with the unsuccessful efforts in the continental United States and elsewhere. As effective vaccines start to become available, the lessons learned from the military’s actions in the Pacific theater in 2020 may be a useful example for others. The coronavirus pandemic is far from over. The manifestations of this virus have defied predictions by experts, a situation that is likely to continue. Potential obstacles to eradication have already arisen, including vaccine resistance among members of the population and inevitable viral mutations, facilitated by the large numbers of infected persons as a result of unsuccessful mitigation efforts. *****Admiral Louis Tripoli, M.D. Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences Command Surgeon, U.S. Navy
