ASUH is for you if you're interested in serving undergraduates as an elected executive officer or senator. You would be responsible for improving the quality of undergraduate student life by representing the needs, interests, and concerns of your constituents (UHM undergraduates) through:

  • participation in UHM policy-making and advisory committees
  • research and lobbying action on campus and community issues, and
  • sponsorship and funding of a variety of programs and activities.
Some of the transferable skills current ASUH senators say they've acquired . . .
  • increased knowledge base - understanding the finer points of government and the political process; seeing things in greater detail; using Roberts' Rules of Order as a formal process for meetings;
  • communication skills - listening to diverse ideas and seeing things from others' perspectives; learning to use diplomacy and force in negotiations; learning teamwork
  • thinking outside the box
  • management skills - meeting deadlines; being on time; learning fiscal processes, and understanding bureaucracy
  • writing skills through authoring bills and other supporting documents
  • research skills through investigating issues
  • networking on and off campus; meeting politicians and administrators; lobbying
  • helping others and making my college year worthwhile
  • intrapersonal skills - becoming more confident and sure of myself; being resilient; not being swayed by the popular
  • understanding the landscape of the political world
Time commitment required: minimum of 3 hours/week.
