BCA
is for you if you're interested in serving on a 10-member board that
governs the student-run campus radio station, KTUH-90.3 FM, and the
Student Video and Filmmakers' Association (SVFA).
Some
of the transferable skills you'll acquire . . .
-
Hiring. Each spring,
the BCA picks general managers to head the radio station and SVFA.
You'll learn how to review applications, come up with interview questions,
and interview candidates. You'll learn the legal way to make sure
the best person is hired.
-
Running
a meeting. The BCA meets once a month to hear program
reports and take care of business. Attending these meetings will help
if you ever run your own meetings or work for a company or organization
that does.
-
Budgeting.
The BCA approves an $80,000 budget each spring. Members must decide
on the spending priorities and then be ready to modify the budget
should the economy change during the year. Budgeting helps you learn
how money needs to be set aside for salaries, supplies, equipment,
repairs, and what you should do if there is not enough revenue to
cover costs.
-
Policymaking.
The BCA is responsible for coming up with policies that affect operations.
This requires getting information and then taking a vote after the
topic has been researched.
-
Following
communication law.
The Federal Communications Commission, whose rules must be followed,
governs the radio station. Board members have the opportunity to learn
more about these laws in order to help the station be in compliance.
Time
commitment required: 4 hours/month
