BOP is for you if you're interested in serving on a 14-member board that governs UH Manoa student publications: Ka Leo O Hawai'i, the campus student newspaper; Hawai'i Review, the student literary journal; and the Student Planner. The Board also operates Beau Press, a custom printing service.

Some of the transferable skills you'll acquire . . .

  • Hiring. Each spring, the BOP picks its editors and an advertising manager after reviewing applications, coming up with interview questions, and meeting candidates. You'll learn the legal way to make sure the best person is hired.
  • Running a meeting. The BOP meets once a month and uses "Robert's Rules of Order" to manage the discussion items. Learning about "Robert's" will help if you ever run your own meetings or work for a company or organization that does.
  • Heading a committee. Much of the BOP's work is done in committees that are headed by students. You will learn how committees are given manageable tasks and deadlines and learn how to meet objectives that help run the overall program.
  • Employing First Amendment law. The BOP selects the editor for the campus newspaper, but not everyone likes what is printed. If the editor can't resolve the complaint, the Board needs to listen and learn about balancing freedom and responsibility.
  • Budgeting. The BOP approves a half-million dollar budget each spring. Members must decide on the spending priorities and then be ready to modify the budget should the economy change during the year. Budgeting helps you learn how money needs to be set aside for salaries, supplies, equipment, repairs, and what you should do if there is not enough advertising revenue to cover costs.
  • Policymaking. The BOP is responsible for coming up with policies that affect operations. For instance, what type of advertising can run in the campus newspaper or who owns the rights to photographs that appear in Ka Leo. This requires getting testimony from both sides and then voting after researching the topic.
  • Planning. Each spring, the BOP holds an annual banquet where outstanding staffers are honored. Board members handle the planning of that event.

Time commitment required: about 4 hours/month
