Joining the Hawaii Review staff is for you if you are interested in learning the necessary skills to putting together a college literary journal. Students have been publishing a literary magazine for the UHM campus since the 1960s.

Some of the transferable skills you'll acquire are . . .

  • Recruiting and training new staffers from campus departments
  • Reporting monthly to the publishing board so it can see that you are meeting objectives
  • Learning how to include texts from Hawai'i and all over the world
  • Attending national conventions on the mainland
  • Creating a vision for your publication
  • Planning for the future so the publication can continue to grow
  • Developing special issues that provide new opportunities for staff and contributors
  • Expanding your knowledge of publications, design, photography, and graphic art.
  • Building a portfolio of work that will help you get a job
  • Meeting new people and interviewing them
  • Attending events or visiting places that most people will never have the opportunity to see
  • Meeting daily deadlines
  • Perfecting proofreading and editing skills
Time commitment required: starting at 3-5 hours/week
