Involvement with Ka Leo is for you if you are interested in working on the daily campus newspaper as a writer, designer, photographer, editor, or advertising sales representative or manager. Students have been publishing a newspaper for the UHM campus since 1922.

Some of the transferable skills you'll acquire . . .

  • managing a staff of editors and helping them achieve their goals for a newspaper that serves 14,000 readers daily and even more through its website http://www.kaleo.org.
  • hiring the best candidates to be your editors.
  • recruiting and training new staffers from campus departments.
  • reporting monthly to the publishing board so it can see that you are meeting objectives.
  • handling payroll for your staff and managing your budget.
  • mediating disagreements between readers, writers, and your editors.
  • learning how to cover the largest university in the Pacific.
  • selecting staff to attend national conventions on the mainland.
  • entering contests to earn recognition for your writers.
  • creating a vision for your publication and guiding your staff toward it.
  • holding weekly meeting to keep your editor on target.
  • helping your staff abide by the profession's Code of Ethics.
  • planning for the future so the publication can continue to grow.
  • developing special issues that provide new opportunities for staff.
  • expanding your knowledge of journalism, photography, design, on-line reporting and writing.
  • building a portfolio of work that will help you get a job.
  • meeting new people and interviewing them.
  • attending events or visiting places that most people will never see.
  • meeting deadlines daily.
