About Us

The University of Hawai`i at Manoa Center for Economic Education was established in 1965. The teacher is the focus of the Center's activities. The teacher above all is the single most important asset in any educational program.
"If people are serious in wanting to improve economic literacy of the nation's students, they must begin by raising the economic literacy of those who will teach them."
              James Tobin
              Nobel Laureate
              Yale University
The Center engages in activities to support the teaching of economics by:
  • Offering teacher training courses to increase their knowledge of basic economic concepts and to familiarize them with methods, strategies and resource materials to teach economics.
  • Maintaining a lending library of over 1,000 titles of the latest curriculum guides, textbooks, and videos.
  • Serving as consultant to teachers, administrators, schools and educational agencies for needs assessments, curriculum development, course content, resource materials and teaching strategies.
  • Developing curriculum materials to assist teachers in determining the most effective tools and methods for delivering high quality economic education.

To bring economics into the classroom, the Center:
  • Conducts courses in economics for teachers. Since 1965, the Center has annually conducted university credit courses to help Hawai`i teachers teach economics more effectively.
  • Develops and distributes economic education curriculum materials. The Center has developed lesson plans, curriculum guides and textbooks on Hawai`i's Economy, Maui Pineapple Company and More Economics. The Center has won two Freedom Foundation Awards for their curriculum development efforts.
  • Sponsors the Economics Challenge, a competition for high school students on their knowledge of economics.
  • Recognizes outstanding economics teachers through its annual Teacher of the Year Award.
