Valentines 2008

R.J. and Rumiko Simonds (maiden name Shinzato)

In the summer of 1977, the Linguistics Society of America held its annual Summer Linguistic Institute at UH. R.J. was a 22-year old UC Berkeley graduate en route from Pittsburgh PA to Taiwan to study Chinese who was enticed by the SLI to stop over for the summer at UH. Rumiko Shinzato was a 22-year old Tokyo University of Foreign Studies graduate on her first trip abroad from Japan to pursue a passion in Linguistics through attending SLI. We met while living at Hale Laulima, dining at the East-West Center, and taking courses at Moore Hall. Over the course of the summer, with help from the caressing breezes of Manoa, romantic beaches of Waianae, and magical stars over Molokai, we fell in love and set off on a new life together. During the following years in Honolulu, we married, had the first of our 3 children, and earned a PhD in Linguistics (Rumiko) and a MD (R.J.) at UH. We now have been married 27 years and although we live on the mainland, we still frequently visit Hawaii and retain the fondest of spots in our hearts for UH.
