Paul and Karen Sullivan (maiden name Lau)
One day, Paul was walking down McCarthy Mall when his friend jabbed him in the ribs and said, "Look at that" (pointing to Karen). "If you don't go out and meet her, you'll regret it for the rest of your life." So Paul ran up to Karen who was standing by the Varney Circle fountain, jumped in front of her, and said, "Stop! You are so beautiful." This happened on July 1, 1970. Every year, on that anniversary date, Paul and Karen return to the UH Mānoa campus, re-enact their meeting moment, including the jump in front of Karen and the words, "Stop! You are so beautiful," and then celebrate their anniversary with a picnic lunch in front of Varney Circle where they met. Their son has now become a part of this wonderful annual tradition.
