The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa will begin a new program this summer, Talent Development Hawaiʻi, designed to give additional educational opportunities to gifted children in Hawaiʻi. The program will run from June 16 to July 11, with sessions held five days a week from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the UH Mānoa campus.

In this year‘s pilot program, four-week summer courses designed to allow gifted students to excel will be offered. The courses are designed by university faculty and will be taught by the same faculty, in addition to dedicated teachers outside of the university. Modeled after a program spearheaded by Northwestern University called Midwest Talent Search, the Talent Development Hawaiʻi program will try to achieve similar goals and encourage students to challenge themselves.

Students will take a variety of three courses, each meeting for one hour a day. These include courses in mathematics (problems to develop mathematical thinking), astro-chemistry, computer science (digital video production), and reading French. Additional classes may be added depending on enrollment figures.

Students finishing grades eight to 10 are invited to apply. Acceptance to the program is selective and students applying should include a teacher‘s recommendation with their application. Applications are currently being accepted on a space available basis. In future years, the program hopes to broaden the grade level range for participants and include courses that carry college credit.

The Talent Development program is sponsored by the College of Natural Sciences at UH Mānoa and the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education. For more information or to print an application or teacher‘s evaluation form, visit the program‘s website at www.math.hawaii.edu/talent.
