Honolulu Community College offers firefighter written test prep class

HONOLULU — Honolulu Community College is offering a series of classes for those interested in preparing for the written test portion of the upcoming firefighter exam. The focus of the class is an overview of the key components of previous firefighting exams with sample problems and general test taking strategies and tips.

The classes, which are $145 including handouts, are 8 hours and will be offered:

· Thursday and Friday, July 28 and 29 — 8 a.m. to noon

· Thursday and Friday, July 28 and 29 — 1 to 5 p.m.

· Monday and Tuesday, August 8 and 9 — 8 a.m. to noon

· Monday and Tuesday, August 8 and 9 — 1 to 5 p.m.


Topics covered in the class will include basic math skills, including geometry and algebra; reading comprehension focusing on the passage, stem of each question and answer choices; mechanical advantage; table interpretation, and test taking strategies and tips.

The class will be taught by Jeff Giesea, a current FIRE instructor at Maui Community College who has also taught at Honolulu Community College. He has been working as a firefighter with the Maui Fire Department for more than four years, and he earned the highest score on two separate firefighter written exams in Hawaiʻi. His academic accomplishments include a bachelor‘s degree in psychology from Texas Christian University, a master‘s degree in philosophy from UH Mānoa, and an associate degree in fire and environmental emergency response (FIRE) from Honolulu Community College.
