PHILADELPHIA, PA — Linda K. Johnsrud, Interim Vice President for Academic Planning & Policy, University of Hawaiʻi System, and professor in the Department of Educational Administration at the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa, has been named president-elect of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE). She will take over as President at the national organization's annual meeting to be held November 2006 in Anaheim, Calif.

"I am honored to have been elected and look forward to my tenure as president in the coming year," Johnsrud said. "ASHE is my intellectual home, and I hope to bring the perspective of a scholar-administrator to the leadership of ASHE — a perspective that values the contribution of scholarly research to the critical decisions facing higher education."

ASHE is a scholarly society with about 1,900 members dedicated to higher education as a field of study. It promotes collaboration among its members and others engaged in the study of higher education through research, conferences, and publications, including its highly regarded journal, The Review of Higher Education. The organization values rigorous scholarly approaches to the study of higher education and practical applications of systemic inquiry. It is also committed to diversity in its programs and membership, and has enjoyed extraordinary success in involving graduate students in its activities.

"Linda Johnsrud‘s selection as president-elect of ASHE is a testimony to her expertise in higher education management, from which the University of Hawaiʻi and the people of our state have realized substantial direct benefit," said UH Interim President David McClain. "We‘re proud of this national recognition of her professional success."

Johnsrud also served as Interim Chancellor of UH West Oʻahu, and as Associate Dean in the College of Education. She has published extensively on faculty and administrative staff work-life, with attention to morale, mobility and mentoring. Her service to the field includes terms as member of the Review of Higher Education editorial board; consulting editor to Research in Higher Education; and member of the ASHE-ERIC Higher Education Report review panel. In 1998, Johnsrud was selected as an ACE (American Council on Education) Fellow, and in 2000 she was elected vice president of the Postsecondary Division of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), and also served on the AERA national executive council. An excerpt from her vice-presidential address "Academic Duty: Our Work, Our Legacy" was reprinted in the ASHE Newsletter. A frequent speaker on campus and in the community, she has worked with campuses in Minnesota, Arizona, Guam, Japan, Korea, and Western Australia.
