The University of Hawaiʻi Art Gallery was recognized twice at the prestigious Hawaii‘s 5-0 Award Show held bi-annually to honor the best design professionals in the State. At a ceremony held this November, exhibition designer Wayne Kawamoto was presented with one of the "Top Five" awards for the design of Crossings 2003: Korea /Hawaiʻi catalogue. Kawamoto also received an "Award of Excellence" for the design of the catalogue Making Connections: Treasures from the University of Hawaiʻi Library. The catalogue accompanied the recent exhibition that drew crowds to the University of Hawaiʻi Art Gallery.

"It‘s like having our own professional designer; he makes us look good," says gallery director Tom Klobe. He added, "I am most impressed by the fact that the winners are chosen by mainland jurors so the decisions are unbiased." Kawamoto works closely with Klobe to create high-quality exhibitions at the gallery on the UH campus—many of which have won awards.

Kawamoto earned both an M.F.A and B.F.A. at the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa. Aspirations to work in gallery design and management led him to the UH Art Gallery in 1993 where he has since served as exhibition designer. Kawamoto previously worked as UH publications specialist for the Board of Publications.
