The Hawaiian Studies undergraduate program has almost quadrupled enrollment in 5 years. This is particularly impressive because of a stricter academic requirement for majors.

The B.A. in Hawaiian Studies is designed to provide the student with a solid foundation in the history, politics, social structure, natural setting, and creative arts of the Hawaiian people. The program offers a choice of six areas of concentration: traditional society, arts, history, modern society, natural environment, and language. Third-year fluency in Hawaiian language is required, as well as some familiarity with Hawaiian literature, culture, politics, and economics. The Native Hawaiian points of view are emphasized in the major.
The B.A. degree requires 38 credits of course work, of which 26 credits are in required courses and 12 are chosen in the field of concentration. In addition, there are 22 credits of prerequisite courses which may be used to satisfy the core requirements and may be taken concurrently with major courses.

A B.A. in Hawaiian Studies consists of 38 credits of appropriate course work,
