Campus Closing

The Center for Japanese Studies wishes everyone in the UHM community and beyond a wonderful holiday season. As a reminder, CJS will be closed from Monday, December 20, 2010 until Monday, January 3, 2011. Email questions can still be sent to during the interim.

We look forward to a productive, happy, and healthy 2011 with everyone.

In memoriam

We are sorry to report the loss of two friends of CJS in recent weeks: Philanthropist Houghton Freeman, and Jean Mori. Although CJS was a not a direct recipient of Freeman support, many of our students and faculty benefited from programs in Asian Studies that were funded by the Freeman Foundation. Freeman’s direct, no-nonsense approach to encouraging Americans to study in Asia has deeply impacted the field. For a full obituary, follow this link.

Jean Mori was a long-time friend and supporter of the Center. Open-hearted, warm, and welcoming, especially toward our students, she touched many of us deeply. Our sympathies to her husband Victor, and the family.
