J-Current also contains information on lectures, performances, exhibitions, research projects, scholarships, and overseas programs.

Mr. Shinichi Maehara, retired Executive Director at Okinawa Television Broadcasting (OTV) will be giving a talk in conjunction with his receiving an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. He is the first person from Okinawa to be awarded an honorary doctorate degree from UH. Mr. Maehara has traveled the world extensively, documenting Okinawan lives in various countries, in a documentary series called Sekai Uchinanchu Kikō (Uchinanchu Worldwide). The series ran from 1987 until 2004 and won a National Association of Commercial Broadcasters in Japan Award in 2002. Mr. Maehara’s work has contributed greatly to the worldwide Uchinanchu network and to Okinawan studies.

The Center for Okinawan Studies will be hosting a special seminar on Tuesday, December 6 by Dr. Harry Wilson of the Okinawan Institute for Science and Technology (OIST). He will be discussing opportunities for UH faculty and students.
