				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Two scholars received the prestigious Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship on May 13, 2013. Consul General of Japan Toyoei Shigeeda and Mrs. Michiko Shigeeda hosted the awards ceremony at their official residence. Howard Hamamoto, Chair of the Crown Prince Akihito Foundation presented certificates to the two recipients. Ms. Ikuyo Takara, a Ph.D. candidate from Tokyo University, is researching pedagogy in Second Language Studies at UH Mānoa, 2012-14. Ms. Laura Specker Sullivan, UHM Ph.D. candidate in Philosophy, will research medical ethics at Kyoto University, 2013-2015. These two bring the total number of scholarship recipients to 140 since 1973. The Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship is a Hawai‘i-based foundation promoting understanding through exchange of scholars between Japan and Hawai‘i. <p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-pagination: none;"><span lang="en-US" style="language: en-US;">Maia Singhal, MA student in Asian Studies, and Joseph Peters, MA student in SLS, will represent UH and Hawaiʻi in Ehime, Japan this summer.   </span>In preparation for their upcoming journey, the interns took a trip to the <span class="il">Ehime</span> Maru Memorial at Kaka<span lang="en-US" style="language: en-US;">ʻ</span>ako Park where Japan America Society of Honolulu President Ed Hawkins provided a comprehensive explanation of the circumstances and importance of the internship to the <span class="il">Ehime</span>-Hawaiʻi relationship.</p>
<p>On Monday, May 20, Maia and Joseph will fly from Honolulu to Matsuyama, the capital of Ehime Prefecture and largest city on the island of Shikoku for an 11-week summer internship centered around the exchange of good-will and culture between the people of Hawaiʻi and Ehime.  Maia and Joseph will visit area schools (from elementary through university), engage with the local community, and even meet the Governor.</p>
<p>CJS thanks Ehime Prefecture, The Japan America Society of Honolulu and the Ehime Maru Memorial Association for promoting mutual exchange activities involving UHM students.</p>
