The Center for Japanese Studies will be closed over the Winter recess from December 21, 2009 until January 4, 2010. Email inquiries however will be answered during this time. Nine UHM undergraduates were honored this year with admission into the Japanese National Honor Society (JNHS). The JNHS recognizes and encourages scholastic achievement and excellent in Japanese study, and five of the nine UHM recipients were honored in a ceremony held in the Tokioka Room on December 10, 2009, pictured in the photo below.
Pictured from left to right are Sean Forte, Brandon Taflinger, Sunhee Kim, Joyce Fukata, and Tomomi Ida. Jason Paul was also honored but unable to attend the ceremony. Three other recipients of JNHS membership received their certificates earlier in the semester. Membership in the JNHS requires an overall GPA of 3.0 and 3.5 in Japanese classes. Congratulations to all of the new JNHA members and the best of luck in all future endeavors.
The 2010-2011 applications for the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships for Japanese Studies are now available. The application can be picked up at the CJS Office, emailed to potential applicants, or downloaded from this link. The FLAS Fellowships are only available to US citizens and permanent residents. The application deadline is February 1, 2010.
Full-time UHM graduate students in Japan-related studies, including international students, may also apply for the following fellowships and scholarships via the new UH Star website by February 1, 2010.
