CJS is excited to announce several upcoming seminars during the fall 2011 semester. All seminars are held in the Tokioka Room unless indicated. We are hoping to add a few more speakers as well and will update the list accordingly.
Aug. 29 (Monday) 3 pm talk by Prof. Motoshige Itoh, University of Tokyo. Talk will be in the CKS auditorium from 3 pm to 4:15 pm. A discussion will follow from 4:30 to 5:30 pm in the Tokioka Room which will be for graduate students only with refreshments.
Sept. 2 (Friday) 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm Pecha Kucha night in the Tokioka Room NOTE THIS EVENT STARTS LATER.
Sept. 23 (Friday) 3 pm-4:30 pm Dr. William Ridgeway, his translation of Nowaki.
Oct. 7 (Friday) 3 pm talk by Prof. Patricia Steinhoff. Talk will be in the CKS auditorium from 3 pm to 4:15 pm. Refreshments will be served in the Tokioka Room right after the talk.
Oct. 25 (Tuesday) 3 pm talk by Prof. Yumiko Tateyama – title to be announced shortly.
Dr. Genshitsu Sen XV, Grand Tea Master of the Urasenke tradition, performed a tea ceremony on the USS Arizona Memorial yesterday. The event was initiated by former Hawaii first lady Jean Ariyoshi as a way to promote peace and global understanding. CJS Director Bob Huey and Associate Director Gay Satsuma accompanied Mr. Akihiko Izukura and Ms. Masayo Motojima, visiting artists from Kyoto, to the residence of Japanese Consul General Yoshihiko Kamo last week. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss Mr. Izukura’s upcoming art installations on the UHM campus and at the Linekona Center. Pictured below are all of the guests, from left to right, Mr. Vince Hazen, Dr. Gay Satsuma, Dr. Bob Huey, Ms. Etsuko Kamo, Ms. Masayo Motojima, Mr. Akihiko Izukura, Consul General Yoshihiko Kamo, and Vice Consul Yuko Miyabe.

Kyoto-based artist Mr. Akihiko Izukura visited CJS last week in preparation for an upcoming exhibition next year on the UHM campus.
