Dr. Samuel Yamashita CJS Seminar, Monday April 5, 2010

Dr. Samuel Yamashita, the Henry E. Sheffield Professor of History at Pomona College will give the next CJS seminar on April 5 titled “Coercion, Compliance and Resistance in Wartime Japan, 1942-1945.” Professor Yamashita uses wartime diaries and the correspondence of ordinary Japanese to chart everyday resistance to government policy and directives during World War II. The image below, provided by Dr. Yamashita, shows several Japanese children playing on an artillery cannon while their mother’s watch and lead them in cheers of “banzai!”
