NAASS AWARD
The Educational Leadership in the Asia/Pacific Region Master’s in Education Degree Program received the Exemplary Program award for 1999 from the North American Association of Summer Sessions. The program launched in Summer 1998 and the first cohort of students completed in Summer 1999. The program was selected for receipt of this prestigious award from among 400 universities and colleges throughout North America. Many guest speakers met with the students during both summers of the first cohort. They included:
- Paul LeMahieu, former Superintendent of Hawai‘i Public Schools—interactive class discussion on future changes in the Hawai‘i school system, including new standards.
- Paul Schwarz, Director of Central Park East Secondary School and advisor to the U.S. Department of Education. Founder of Reinventing Leadership, a principal preparation initiative at Teachers College, Columbia University. Presented a workshop on leadership.
- Merry White, Boston University author and researcher on Japanese education.
- Other presenters included: Arnold Engberg, educator and school reformer, and Steve Phillips, educator and school reformer. The 2002-2003 program will feature more outstanding lectures and presentations from visiting scholars.
