Bachelor of Education Degree in Physical Education

Teacher Education K-12

The Department of Kinesiology and Leisure Science (KLS) of the College of Education offers the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree program that provides the professional preparation curriculum for students who wish to teach physical education in grades K-12. As one of the missions of the Department of KLS, this program prepares physical education professionals who are concerned with the acquisition and transmission of knowledge that contribute to the growth, development, health, fitness, and motor performance of all individuals.

Students interested in the B.Ed. program with a teaching emphasis in physical education must meet the admission requirements of the College of Education. These include completion of the University of Hawai‘i’s General Education Core consisting of 1) communication, 2) world civilizations, 3) mathematics, 4) foreign or Hawaiian language, 5) arts and humanities, 6) social sciences, and 7) natural science. Note that the General Education Core for this program varies from 53-61 credits and is a modification of the University Core. Therefore, departmental advising is strongly recommended during the freshman year. Students should begin their 60 credits of Academic Major and Related Courses as early as possible. Admission to the College of Education in the Junior year requires a minimum GPA of 2.75. Students interested in the program must have a genuine desire to work with children and youth and have a minimum of 40 hours of previous experience in group leadership at several levels and in various activities and sports. After admission to the College of Education, the student must complete the Professional Core of 32 credits. The minimum total number of credits required for graduation is 141. The GPA of 2.75 must be maintained for approval for student teaching and for graduation from the College of Education.
