College of Education: Masters of Teaching in Education

Master of Teaching in Education

Welcome to the College of Education Master of Education in Teaching Web site.

The Master of Education in Teaching (MEdT) Program gives prospective teachers in Hawaii opportunities to develop their skills, knowledge, and dispositions to classroom teaching and leadership. The two-year, full-time program is for students who have earned a baccalaureate degree in a field other than education.

When they have completed the two-year program, graduates will have spent more than 1300 hours in schools, taught a whole semester as the teacher of record in their own classroom,  and completed a research project on schooling and teaching. They will have earned a graduate degree and will be eligible for initial teacher licensure at the elementary or secondary level.

Three separate models are encompassed under the MEdT Program.

  • The Professional Development School model is a partnership between the College of Education and a Hawaii Department of Education school complex.  The partnership focuses both the preparation of new teachers and the professional development of experienced teachers from the partnering schools.
  • The Hookulaiwi model emphasizes the professional development of high quality teachers for communities with large numbers of native Hawaiian children. Through partnerships with local community leaders and organization, and the Department of Education Schools the program seeks the long term retention of teachers in high need areas and also serves the needs of Hawaiian Language Immersion and Charter schools.
  • The On-the Job model places candidates in vacant teaching positions where they complete their course work while working as a full-time paid teacher. Placement in the program depends on the current needs of the Hawaii Department of Education. At this time the program is completed in partnership with the national Teach for America organization.

The application deadline for all three models is March 1 of each year and new cohorts begin coursework and fieldwork each Fall semester.
