College of Education: Development / Alumni

College Development and Alumni Relations

The Office of College Development and Alumni Relations is a unit in the College of Education whose purpose is to advance the College’s mission of teaching, research and service by:

  • Involving College alumni, faculty, students and other constituents in the life of the College. The Office of College Development works closely with the College of Education Alumni Association in pursuing these goals.
  • Providing high-quality programs and services which are responsive to the needs of our constituents. Recognition is provided to scholarship recipients, donors and other supporters at two events each year, the Recognition Luncheon, held in December, and the College of Education Recognition Dinner, held in May. The Office of College Development also cooperates in the planning of other events for faculty, alumni and students, as requested by the dean.
  • Informing our constituents of the College's accomplishments, challenges, and priorities, thereby gaining their support for the College. This goal is achieved primarily through publication of Current Perspectives, the College newsletter, and Educational Perspectives, the College journal, each of which is published yearly
  • Identifying, cultivating, and decreeing financial investments in the College, and being responsible stewards of our relationships and resources. The major responsibility of the Office is to raise an ever-increasing amount of private support to strengthen the quality of the College, in accordance with needs articulated by the academic leadership of the College, and during a time of diminishing public support. The Office is responsible for private fundraising efforts on behalf of the College and reports directly to the Dean of the College. It coordinates its fundraising activities with the University of Hawaii Foundation.

When the Office was established in 1989, there were only two endowed scholarships in the College, and one of the major goals of the newly-created office was to build a viable scholarship program which could provide financial assistance to a greater number of students. With a staff of never more than two full-time positions, the office has succeeded in establishing 28 endowed scholarships with a valuation of more than $1,700,000. During the 2004-05 academic year more than $140,000 in scholarships was awarded to 70 students.

The Office of College Development and Alumni Relations is located in Wist Annex 2, Room 131, 1776 University Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96822. Contact Mark Fukeda, Director of Development at (808) 956-7988 or via email at mark.fukeda@uhf.hawaii.edu.
