In 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his famous speech, “I have a Dream” which forever changed the way we viewed ourselves in relation to others and our role within society. His message of freedom, diversity, unity, and social justice rings true today as our nation embarks on a newfound commitment to community service. Everyone has hopes and dreams for a better tomorrow. In constructing these dreams, we can imagine a more diverse and just education for our children. Imagine a classroom where all students find connection and relevance to what they are learning. Imagine an education that fosters self-worth, critical thinking, creativity and community. Imagine a classroom where we openly talk about controversial issues, challenge oppression, and take action to solve them. It is in this spirit that we present Teach the Dream. Teach the Dream is a cultural approach to learning and teaching. It was inspired by the idea that learning is made more meaningful when we share or teach it to others. The concept is simple, but the impact is great. Undergraduate students learn about their ethnic history and culture and then are empowered with the pedagogical tools to teach these critical perspective and transformative content to youth in social studies classrooms in our public schools. Teaching becomes a tool for social change. Read about the Teach the Dream mission, certificate, and Dream Teams.
