Katherine Li

Program: Educatioanl Foundations

Katherine is a doctoral student in Ed. Foundations. She has a BA in Asian Studies and a MA is Transcultural Studies. She has studied abroad in France, Japan and China, and speaks French, German, Chinese and Japanese. Katherine's research interests include: cross-cultural approaches to conflict management and transformation, spiritual education, intercultural communication and global citizenship education.

 

Sharon Fukayama

Program: Curriculum and Instruction

Sharon Fukayama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. She attended La Pietra before going to Keio Academy in New York. After graduating from high school, Sharon studied education and early childhood language acquisition at Keio University in Japan. Upon returning to Hawaii after college, she continued her education and received a Masters degree in education from Chaminade University. Currently, Sharon is a doctoral student in curriculum and instruction at the University of Hawaii.

Sharon enjoys being active. She does karate, gymnastics, judo, and golf. She also bakes cupcakes and energy bars. Her favorite TV show is John and Kate plus 8. In her spare time she likes to play video games.

 

Kavita Rao

Program: Special Education

Kavita is a doctoral student in Exceptionalities. She works as an educational technology specialist for Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL). Her work includes doing teacher training and curriculum development in Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa, the Marshall Islands, CNMI, Palau, and the Federated States of Micronesia. She is interested in the creative potential of technology and the ways in which technology can be utilitized to address diverse learning styles.

 

Chris Lucas

Program: Educational Administration (Higher Education)

Chris is a graduate assistant for the Office of Student Academic Services in the College of Education. Originally from Indiana, he has research interests in judicial affairs, student governance, and access to higher education.

Kristen A. Kawczynski

Program: Educational Administration

Kristen A. Kawczynski is currently finishing her Ph.D. as a full-time student and hopes to defend her dissertation and graduate in the Spring of 2008.  She is originally from the east coast of the United States and grew up in Maryland outside of Washington, D.C.  She received her BA in Interdisciplinary Studies from Hofstra University (Hempstead, NY) and her M.Ed. in Student Affairs Practice in Higher Education from the University of Delaware (Newark, DE).

Kristen has worked professionally for over seven years at both public and private colleges and universities in the areas of residence life and judicial affairs.  Her dissertation will be a qualitative study of the experiences of sophomore college students who participated in a second-year experience program.

Michael Kalani Laughlin

Program: Kinesiology and Rehabilitative Science

Michael is a current doctoral student and graduate assistant in KRS with an emphasis on Adapted Physical Education.  He has a B.Ed. in Physical Education and a M.S. in Adapted Physical Education both from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He has experience teaching in Hawaii's public and private school in both physical education and special education.  In his free time he likes to play soccer and enjoy the outdoors.

 

Eddie Gose

Program: Educational Technology

Eddie is a first year doctoral student in the College of Education's newest PhD program. He is a graduate assistant for the Office of Technology & Distance Programs for the COE. He enjoys the outdoors and has a distinct interest in online instruction and pedogogy. On his free time, Eddie enjoys surfing (in the ocean and on the web). Eddie also enjoys gaming and the impacts it has on education.

 

Brandon Chun

Program: Educational Administration

Brandon is a doctoral student in Educational Administration and is currently the Transition To Teaching (TTT) program Manager at the College of Education. He has a B.A. in English and Political Science from Chaminade University and received his Masters degree in Education with an emphasis in Educational Administration from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2006. He has been with the University since 2003.

 

Kelly Carter Merrill

Program: Educational Administration

Kelly is an assistant professor in the Educational Administration Department with a higher education focus. Kelly recently came to the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, August 2007, from Loyola University Chicago where she was a visiting assistant professor in the Higher Education Administration Program. As a recent PhD (summer 2006), she enjoys helping doctoral candidates navigate their program progress. Kelly is originally from Virginia and worked in university administration for 15 years in five different states (VA, PA, SC, NC, and IL).
