Chuck Birkeland's Lab is part of the Hawai'i Cooperative Fishery Research Unit located in the Zoology Department at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa in Honolulu. Chuck and his students study coral reef ecology in Hawai'i and American Samoa. We focus on the effects of global warming, introduced species, and land management on corals and coral reefs, and we are especially interested in management approaches to reduce the impacts of these problems. Much of our work is on reef-building corals, so the identification of these remarkably diverse species is fundamental to our efforts.
