Ofu Field Station

Ofu Island is part of the Manu'a Islands (Click here for a map). There are units of the National Park of American Samoa (NPSA) on Ofu and Ta'u Islands within Manu'a. See the Natural History of American Samoa booklet for general ecological info about the Territory, including the Manu'a Islands. These islands have small populations, and the marine and terrestrial ecosystems are still quite intact, providing suitable sites for a variety of ecological studies.

In August 2004, the Coral Lab and NPSA established a small field station on Ofu to support our research and management activities. We are gradually assembling field and lab equipment to increase our research capability on Ofu and elsewhere in the Manu'a Islands. The field station is next to Vaoto Lodge and the Ofu Airport. We encourage scientists and researchers interested in working on Ofu or elsewhere in the Manu'a Islands to contact us to see about possibly coordinating our activities. For more info about the Ofu Field Station, please contact Chuck Birkeland at (808) 956-8678 or charlesb@hawaii.edu, Lance Smith (UH Birkeland Lab) at (808) 221-8297 or lancesmi@hawaii.edu, or Peter Craig (NPSA) at 011 (684) 633-7082 or Peter_Craig@nps.gov.
