'Okusitino Māhina

 

'Okusitino holds a PhD degree in Pacific history from ANU, Canberra, Australia, BA and MA (1st Class Honours) degrees in sociology and anthropology from Auckland University, where he was Senior Scholar in Anthropology, 1983. He has taught at Massey University, Auckland, and 'Atenisi University, Tonga. 'Okusitino was Director of 'Atenisi Institute, Dean of 'Atenisi University, and Professor of Tongan studies, 1997-99. He has judged speech, dance, and music competitions in Tonga and abroad. 'Okusitino was co-curator of Lalavaology and Potopoto'aniumui art exhibitions by Filipe Tohi, in Tonga, and young Tongan artists, in New Zealand, in 2003, respectively. He has been lecturing in Pacific political economy and Pacific arts in the Department of Anthropology, Auckland University, since 1994. He has published extensively on a number of interdisciplinary subjects, including poetry in Tongan. He also dances and sings. 'Okusitino is the author of Reed Book of Tongan Proverbs: Ko e Tohi Ôa e Reed ki he Lea Tonga Heliaki (Reed Publishing, 2004), and co-editor of, and contributor to, Researching the Pacific and Indigenous Peoples: Issues and Perspectives (Centre for Pacific Studies, AU, 2004). His research interests include, inter alia, time and space, development, globalisation, and trans-cultural aesthetics.
