Who can Apply?

Academic Requirements

18 credit hours of coursework on the Philippines in a defined program of study at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, to include:

Language Requirement: 3rd level competency. All language competency requirements can be met either through coursework (Tagalog/Filipino and Ilokano 301/302), or equivalent examinations. Language courses do not count towards Certificate requirements.

Academic advising is provided by the Center for Philippine Studies in consultation with various departments and programs.

Students not already registered in a graduate degree program at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa must be "in residence" for at least one semester (or full time equivalent, usually 9 credits) to qualify for the Graduate Certificate Program.

Students already registered in a degree program at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa are advised to apply as early as possible in order to plan for the Certificate requirements. In any event, applications must be received at least one semester before graduation. Notification of acceptance or denial is sent to each applicant as soon as possible after a decision is reached.
