Graduate Certificate in Philippine Studies

Who can Apply?

• Students with a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college/university, or its equivalent from a recognized foreign institution of higher learning, who would like to pursue a specialized interdisciplinary study of the Philippines.
• Students currently enrolled in any master's, doctoral, or professional school degree program at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, who would like to add a specialized and interdisciplinary dimension to their studies on the Philippines.
• Students pursusing MA degrees in the Asian Studies Program at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, who focus specifically on the Philippines and who desire certification of their specific area of competence.

Academic Requirements

18 credit hours of coursework on the Philippines in a defined program of study at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, to include:

• 15 credits (usually 5 courses) at the 300 level or higher from at least two major divisions (social sciences, humanities, or arts), with no more than 9 credits in a single discipline. At least 9 credits (usually 3 courses) must be 600 level or higher.
• ASAN 600P: Scope and Methods in Asian Studies: Philippines (Research Paper on the Philippines and Oral Exam)

Language Requirement: 3rd level competency. All language competency requirements can be met either through coursework (Tagalog/Filipino and Ilokano 301/302), or equivalent examinations. Language courses do not count towards Certificate requirements.

Academic advising is provided by the Center for Philippine Studies in consultation with various departments and programs.

Students not already registered in a graduate degree program at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa must be "in residence" for at least one semester (or full time equivalent, usually 9 credits) to qualify for the Graduate Certificate Program.

Students already registered in a degree program at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa are advised to apply as early as possible in order to plan for the Certificate requirements. In any event, applications must be received at least one semester before graduation. Notification of acceptance or denial is sent to each applicant as soon as possible after a decision is reached.
