SEMINAR-LECTURE
Update on Mindanao:
The MILF and GRP Peace Talks
by Fr. William H. Kreutz, S. J.
Fr. Kreutz will discuss the problems and issues of the on-going peace talks between the
Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF)and the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP),
which is brokered by Malaysia. In 1996, the Philippine government entered into an agreement with a militant
Islamic group, the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), to grant autonomy to the Muslims of
Mindanao. Soon after this, the other Islamic faction (MILF) pressed for independence. The talks,
which began in 1998, have been stalled by the war in 2000 and intermittent violations of the
agreed ceasefire. Fr. Kreutz will analyze the realities of the continuing tension and prospects
for peace.
Fr. Kreutz is currently the President of a leading Jesuit-run institution in Mindanao, the
Ateneo de Zamboanga University, on the island of Mindanao, Philippines.
