Dr. Dean Alegado kicks off the lecture series on the Filipino Centennial in HawaiiThe Center conducts regular "brown bag" lectures and public seminars on topics related to the Philippines and Filipinos. It has presented more than 300 speakers to date. The lecture series is intended to promote intellectual interest and interaction within the University community, particularly among Philippine specialists. It also serves as a forum for distinguished Philippine specialists, intellectuals, officials, and other visitors who are invited to speak. Among them have been Senator Leticia Ramos Shahani, former Senate President Jovito Salonga, former Senator Arturo Tolentino, former University of the Philippines President Jose Abueva, Dr. Doreen Fernandez, Dr. Carolina Hernandez, Dr. Mahar K. Mangahas, the late writers Salvador P. Lopez and Bienvenido Santos, famous author N. V. M. Gonzalez, noted novelist and 1980 Ramon Magsaysay awardee for Literature, Journalism, and Communications F. Sionil Jose. The Center also sponsored the first Asian-scholar-in-residence at UHM, Dr. Bienvenido Lumbera, University of the Philippines professor of literature and Filipino, who also won the Magsaysay Award.

OUTREACH ACTIVITIES The Center has an extensive outreach service, particularly in the large Filipino community, which has been the fastest growing population group in Hawaii. Outreach services include seminars, workshops, lectures, consultation, technical or professional advice, and information or materials. The Center has initiated, sponsored or supported issues involving minority concerns, human rights, civil rights, women's rights, affirmative action, anti-discrimination programs, anti-dictatorship activities, educational and employment opportunities for disadvantaged groups, and the promotion of Filipino cultural heritage.
Many of the Center's Professors and Specialists contribute articles and commentaries regularly on important issues to the two Filipino newspapers in the community, the Fil-Am Courier and Hawaii Filipino Chronicle. They have also given lectures in seminars conducted by the Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii and other Filipino organizations. Similarly, they have organized cultural exhibits or presentations at the Honolulu Academy of Arts , YWCA, the Philippine Consulate, and at UH. Other activities involve language assistance or translation services for the courts, immigration service, schools, prisons and hospitals; citizenship training; scholarships for Filipino-American students; and cooperation with other ethnic groups in Hawaii. Overall, the Center is highly regarded by the community as the source of competent expertise and valuable assistance on Philippine affairs and Filipino issues in Hawaii.
