The Department of Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures at the University of Hawaii offers instruction in many Southeast Asian languages, including Cambodian (Khmer),Ilokano, Indonesian, Tagalog, Thai and Vietnamese.

IPLL also provides regular instruction in other languages of interest to Southeast Asian scholars, including Arabic, Hindi and Sanskrit.

 

Cambodian (Khmer)


khmerUnder the direction of Professor Chhany Sak-Humphry, UH offers instruction in the first through fourth levels of the Khmer language, and also offers classes in Khmer language in the media and the structure of Khmer.

Professor Sak-Humphry also coordinates the Advanced Study of Khmer Program, an intensive eight-week training in Khmer language and culture held each year in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Illokano


filipinoUnder the direction of Associate Professor Aurelio Agcaoili, UH offers instruction in the Ilokano language from the first through fourth levels, including classes on Ilokano for Health Sciences, structure, literature, interpretation and translation technique.

 

 

Indonesian


indoUnder the direction of Professor Uli Kozok, UH offers first through fourth level instruction in the Indonesian language, and classes on modern Indonesian literature, the history of the Indonesian language and the structure of Indonesian.

UH also offers three dedicated distance education e-learning courses for advanced Indonesian. Click here for information on the classes and technical requirements. These courses were developed between 2003 and 2007, by a team of instructors and methodologists under the supervision of Professor Kozok. Enrollment is open to students outside UH and non-students through the UH Outreach College!

 

Tagalog


filipinoUnder the direction of Professor Ruth Mabanglo, UH offers instruction in Tagalog from the first through fourth levels, including classes on aural comprehension, structure and translation technique.

The Filipino Language and Literature program also offers a host of classes on Filipino film and literature (in both English and Tagalog).

Professor Mabanglo also coordinates the the Advanced Filipino Abroad program, an intensive eight-week advanced Tagalog language-training program held in De La Salle University, Dasmarinas.

 

Thai


thaiUnder the direction of Professor Yuphaphann Hoonchamlong, UH offers first through fourth year instruction in the Thai language, with additional classes on Thai literature, Thai language in the media and Thai linguistics.

 

 

Vietnamese


vietUnder the direction of Professor Stephen O'Harrow, UH offers first through fourth year instruction in the the Vietnamese language, with additional classes on Vietnamese literature, Vietnamese language in the media and the structure of Vietnamese.
