Joint Asian Studies/Library & Information Studies Degree
The School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) and the Department of Asian Studies have agreed on a dual master's degree program that double-counts some credits. Students choose Plan 1 or Plan 2 as their course of study:
Plan 1: Asian Studies as your primary degree:
Of the 36 credits required for the MA in Asian Studies, SLIS counts 9 credits at the 400 and 600 levels toward the MLIS with the advice and approval of your adviser. You will thus need only 33 credits for the MLIS instead of 42, for a total of 69 credits for both degrees.
Plan 2: Library and Information Studies as your primary degree:
Of the 42 credits required for the MLIS, the Department of Asian Studies will accept 9 credits.
Interested students must meet the entry requirements of both programs. Any required prerequisites for admission to either degree will not be counted in the above plan. You will have to meet degree requirements of both programs, such as a thesis, or written or oral examinations.
This dual degree program will make you competitive in the field of library studies as you will have a special focus in Asian Collections as well as in library and information systems. Please see the advisers in the respective discipline program if you intend to apply:
