If you test out of language, 6 credits of something else. Native speakers do not have to take a language if their area center requires their native language. For example, a Korean native speaker in Korean Studies would not take a language, but would take 6 hours of something else.

  • Graduate Division requirements on 699 courses: If you have doubts, please check the previous link. Grad Division must now sign-off on all 699 courses. In addition, 699 courses may only be used for electives, not as a substitute for Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences requirement -- except when no courses in those categories are available.

For the Masters Degree, students without sufficient preparation in Asia-related course work may be required to take make-up courses for which no degree credit will be offered.

Students enrolling from an Asian country may have the foreign language requirement waived if they plan to concentrate on their native country or region. If they elect to concentrate on a country other than their own, they must fulfill the previously stated requirement.

Area of Concentration means one of the following areas: (1) China, (2) Japan, (3) Korea, (4) Philippines, (5) Southeast Asia

 

Additional requirements

1. Residence requirement involves aminimum of 2 semesters, full-time academic study, or 4 six-week summer sessions.
2. At least 19 (half + 1) of the 36 credits that count towards the degree must be completed at the University of Hawaii while a classified graduate student. Of these 19 credits, at least 8 must be in courses numbered 600 and above.
3. A maximum of nine credits in directed reading/research (699) may be applied toward degree requirements.

For Plan A: Satisfactory completion of a thesis and an oral examination by a 3-member faculty committee.
For Plan B: Presentation of a portfolio consisting of 2 seminar papers and satisfactory completion of an oral examination based on them by a 3-member faculty committee.
Graduate Division has degree requirements that all programs must follow.

Please note, ASAN 310, ASAN 312 and any 399 or 499 cannot be counted toward the degree requirements.

There are 3 major parts to the certificate program: (1) 18 credit hours, (2) demonstrating language competency, (3) passing a final examination.

Language Competency

All language competency requirements can be met either through coursework in or equivalency examinations in the chosen certificate area.

Language courses do not count toward certificate credit requirements.

Students may choose between one of two options:

 

How to obtain the certificate

If you are an Asian Studies student Do nothing. It is given to you automatically.

If you are not an Asian Studies student compile the following information for submission prior to your final semester at the University of Hawaii:

  1. From MyUH, print a copy of all of the courses that you have taken
  2. Print this page and bring to the Center for Southeast Asian Studies in Moore 416. In discussions with you, the director will ensure that you have met all of the requirements. On this print out, please print your name exactly as you want it to appear on the certificate.
  3. The center director must:
    1. send a memo to the Graduate Chair of Asian Studies certifying that you have met the center's requirements for the certificate;
    2. attach a copy of your print out to that memo;
    3. mark (circle) the courses that count toward the certificate on your print out;
  4. The Graduate Chair of Asian Studies will ask the Asian Studies secretary to make up a certificate.
  5. The Graduate Chair of Asian Studies will send 3 things to Graduate Division:
    1. a memo certifying that Asian Studies is satisfied that you have met the requirements for the Graduate Certificate;
    2. a copy of the memo from the center director, with the print out attached;
    3. the Graduate Certificate itself.
  6. A copy of the Graduate Chair's memo to Graduate Division and the center director's memo with attached print out, will be filed in the Graduate Certificate folder, now in the graduate adviser's office
