The
Center for Second Language Research (CSLR) is a research and program
development unit of the Department
of Second Language Studies at the University
of Hawai`i. The CSLR relies on federal and private foundation grants
to maintain administrative staff and support second language research,
curriculum development, and teacher training projects. These projects
include exploration of the social, cultural, political, and cognitive
dimensions of language and literacy learning and use among indigenous,
heritage language, and pidgin/creole populations.
Drawing on University of Hawai`i resources in heritage language teaching,
critical second language studies, applied linguistics, education, and
anthropology, the CSLR develops projects that serve immigrants from
Southeast Asia, the Pacific, and East Asia. The CSLR also undertakes
collaborative projects with community and state agencies such as 'Olelo
Public Television, Na
Loio Immigrant Rights and Public Interest Legal Center, the Interagency
Council for Immigrants, and the Hawai`i
State Civil Rights Commission. While the CSLR serves State and
local immigrant communities, projects are intended to inform development
and theorizing of critical participatory practices across diverse migrant
populations world-wide.
