Hi! My name is Emily Lam, and I am a candidate for the M.A. in Second Language Studies program at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. Born and raised in Hong Kong, I immigrated to the U.S. at the age of twelve. Prior to my studies at UH, I received my B.A. in Linguistics at the University of Chicago. I also worked with youth and adult immigrants in school and community settings in Chicago and San Francisco, and received a Certificate of Training for Health Care Interpreters from Kaiser Permanente/ City College of San Francisco.

Since moving to Hawai’i, I have taught adult ESL classes at McKinley Community School for Adults, volunteered at the ESOL program at Stevenson Middle School, and tutored at the SHINE program. My current academic interests include bilingual education, bilingualism, language and identity, and critical pedagogy.
